The first guide told you what to write. This one shows you how to edit it.
Because the first draft is not the one you should give him. It is the warm-up. The real letter emerges in the editing.
## Step 1: Delete Every "Should"
A love letter is not the place to tell him what he could do better. If you find any sentence that sounds like feedback or evaluation, remove it.
Sentences to delete:
- "I wish you would..."
- "It would be nice if you..."
- "You could be more..."
A love letter is for appreciation, not instruction. If you have something he needs to hear, have that conversation separately.
## Step 2: Check Your "I" to "You" Ratio
Women are often taught to express feelings, which means your default might be "I feel," "I think," "I want." But a love letter for him should center him.
Too much "I":
> "I feel so lucky to have you. I want you to know how much you mean to me. I think about you all the time."
Better balance:
> "You have a way of making hard days easier. When I was stressed last Tuesday, you did not try to fix it โ you just sat next to me. That is who you are. I notice."
Quick test: Read your letter and count "I" vs "you." If "I" appears more than twice as often as "you," rewrite a few sentences to start with him.
## Step 3: Replace Judgments With Moments
Men hear judgments all day โ at work, from colleagues, from expectations. A love letter should not sound like another evaluation.
Judgment (what to avoid):
> "You are such a good person."
Moment (what to write instead):
> "Last Tuesday, when I was stressed and you just made me tea without being asked โ that is who you are."
The first version tells him what to think. The second version shows him what you see. The second one stays.
## Step 4: The "Would I Say This Out Loud?" Test
Read your letter as if he were sitting next to you. Would you actually say these words out loud?
If a sentence feels too formal or too poetic for how you actually talk, rewrite it. The goal is not to sound like a love letter writer. The goal is to sound like you.
## Step 5: Read It Out Loud โ Then Delete the First Sentence
Most people start with a warm-up. "I have been meaning to write this..." "I am not good at this but..." Delete it.
Before:
> "I have been meaning to write this for a while. I am not great at expressing my feelings, but I wanted to try. Last Tuesday, when you made me tea without being asked..."
After:
> "Last Tuesday, when you made me tea without being asked..."
Stronger. It starts with him, not with your hesitation.
## Step 6: Consider How He Reads
Men and women sometimes process emotional content differently. Keep these guidelines in mind:
- He may not re-read it immediately. He might read it once and set it aside. That does not mean it did not land. It might mean he needs time.
- He may joke about it. That is often how men hold emotional weight. If he makes a joke after reading it, do not assume he did not appreciate it.
- He may not know how to respond. A love letter can catch a man off guard. Give him space. Do not ask "did you like it?" Let him come to you.
## The Self-Review Checklist
- [ ] I deleted every sentence that sounds like feedback or evaluation (Step 1)
- [ ] "You" appears at least half as often as "I" (Step 2)
- [ ] I replaced judgments with specific moments (Step 3)
- [ ] It sounds like something I would say out loud (Step 4)
- [ ] I read it out loud and deleted the first sentence (Step 5)
- [ ] I am giving it to him without overexplaining or asking for a reaction (Step 6)
