# Apology Letter Editing Guide: Make Your Sorry Feel Sincere
Writing an apology letter is hard. Editing one is even harder, because you have to be honest with yourself about whether you are actually apologizing or just trying to feel better.
Use this checklist to make sure your apology lands the way it should.
---
## The Sincerity Checklist
Every apology letter should pass these tests:
- [ ] Did I name exactly what I did wrong? ("I am sorry I snapped at you" beats "I am sorry if I seemed upset.")
- [ ] Did I acknowledge how it made them feel? ("I know that hurt you" is necessary.)
- [ ] Did I avoid the word "but"? ("I am sorry, but you also..." is not an apology.)
- [ ] Did I take full responsibility? No "mistakes were made." No "I was stressed." Just owning it.
- [ ] Did I offer a plan for change? ("I am going to work on [specific behavior] so this does not happen again.")
- [ ] Did I ask for forgiveness without demanding it? ("I hope you can forgive me" β not "Please forgive me right now.")

## Before and After
Before (defensive): "I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. I was really stressed and you were not listening to me. I did not mean it."
After (sincere): "I am sorry for snapping at you. I was wrong to let my stress come out that way. I hurt you, and I take full responsibility for that."
What changed: No "if." No excuse. No blame. Full ownership.

## The Four Elements of a True Apology
According to the late psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Lazare, a good apology has four elements:
1. Acknowledge the offense. Name what you did wrong specifically.
2. Explain without excusing. Provide context, but do not use it as a justification.
3. Express remorse. Say you are sorry and mean it.
4. Offer to make amends. Describe what you will do differently.
If your letter is missing any of these four, go back and add it.

## What to Cut
- "I am sorry ifβ¦" β Replace with "I am sorry thatβ¦"
- "Mistakes were made" β Replace with "I made a mistake"
- "You know how I am" β Replace with "I am working on this"
- Any justification β Save for a separate conversation

## After You Send It
An apology letter is the beginning, not the end. After you send it, give them space. Do not ask if they read it. Do not ask if they forgive you. Let them process. Your job now is to demonstrate changed behavior, not to ask for reassurance.
